Book of the week 7/5/07 Thor #1

Written by J. Michael Straczynski
Pencils by Olivier Coipel
Inks by Mark Morales
Colors by Laura Martin
Lettering by Chris Eliopoulos

I have to express right away that I was extremely shocked that I liked this book, I've actually always hated Thor as a character. I mean I thought he was cool in the big battles but I have never bought a Thor book.....until today.

I was intrigued when I heard that Thor had died and like everyone else it was a huge shock when he returned in Civil War.....until it turned out that he was a clone. I wasn't even planning on picking up this issue but I'm a fan of Straczynski and after House of m, I will buy anything drawn by Coipel. And I am ever so happy that I bought this book.

The story revolves around Donald Blake, Thor's alter ego, trying to convince the norse god to come back to earth and that he is needed. The contrast between the two characters as being separate and the same is very well done by Straczynski and Coipel art is just beautiful and poetic.

Fallen Son: Iron man moved me this week but this book made me fall in love with a character that I have previously disliked and it did it all in one issue, to me that gets the nod as the book of the week. Let's hope this team keeps up the great work!

Book of the Week 6/27/07 Sinestro Corps #1

Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Ethan Van Sciver

Unlike last week where big events were unfolding in almost every book, this week seemed a little lackluster to me. Sure, amazons were attacking, x-men were bickering, and monitors were still giving me a history lesson.

However, about a month ago I mentioned big things were in store for the green lantern corps. and this week is where it begins. The sinestro corps is now assembled and launches its attack on the green lanterns. Ethan Van Sciver's art is spectacular and really plays with the light and dark visuals. It's easy to picture the rings are actually glowing on the page. Geoff Johns also shines here. Like he did in REBIRTH, this story ties current events in with the green lantern mythos, this time looking at Kyle Rayner's past, his time as a green lantern and the price he's paid for it. This leads Kyle to to a transformation that will have Kyle's fans up in arms.

As one of those fans, I don't believe this is the end of Kyle's story. He's just been taken off the side of the angels for the time being. Johns also makes great use of the green lantern villians. Sinestro, Parallax, and the Cyborg are all there...plus the escaped Superboy Prime and the revived Anti-Monitor. In darkest night indeed!

Book of the week 6/20/07 Captain America #27

Written by Ed Brubaker
Pencils and inks by Steve Epting and Mike Perkins
Coloring by Frank D'Armata
Lettering by Joe caramagna

This was a very big week from DC with a lot of surprises but I was left with mixed feelings about those books. Captain America 27 was the last book that I read and in one sentence I can sum up why it was chosen as the book of the week.

I'm OK with Steve Rogers death.

Before reading this issue I still found myself mourning over cap, heck I barely made it through Fallen Son: Spider-man this week without crying like a baby, but Brubaker truly does the impossible. He brings Bucky back to life (with a metal arm no less) and I am totally in love with the whole thing. I WANT BUCKY TO BE CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!! Brubaker is definitely teasing this but I can only hope that he follows through.

Epting and Perkins do an amazing job on this book but I have to say that the wild card on this team is Caramagna's coloring. You would expect that a Captain America book would be bright and full of red, white and blue but the tone of this book is really dark and Caramagna's coloring does a beautiful job of conveying this. I can say that this is the first time in my comic reading history that I have actually taken notice of the coloring and it's something to be commended.

I'm so glad this book is back on schedule and I can't wait to see what happens next. All I know is that Bucky Barnes now has cap's shield and it looks good on him.
